Introduction to Buddhism and Meditation

Wednesday 4th May – 8th June  2016
Quaker Meeting House, 16 Queens Road, Leicester LE2 1WP

Starting on 4th May 7.30 pm, for six Wednesdays, we will be offering a series of evening meetings  introducing key Buddhist principles and the basics of Buddhist meditation. The meetings, which will be led by a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order, are aimed at newcomers to Buddhism and anyone who would like to refresh their Dharma knowledge and practice.
Over the six weeks we will learn two traditional Buddhist meditations, the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana (Development of loving kindness).
The programme will be based loosely around Chris Pauling (Vadanya)’s book ‘Introducing Buddhism’. All welcome to any or all of the meetings.
Course Programme:
Week 1:   What is Buddhism?
Week 2:   Who was the Buddha?

Week 3:   The Buddhist approach to ethics
Week 4:   What is meditation?
Week 5:   Developing wisdom
Week 6:   The poetic dimension: faith and imagination in Buddhism
There will be opportunities to ask questions and discuss points that may arise and there are printed handouts each week.
All welcome. Voluntary donations to cover cost of room hire, refreshments etc. would be much appreciated (suggested donation: £4 – £7 per week).

Sangha Night

Thursdays 7.00 – 9.15
Quaker Meeting House, 16 Queens Road, Leicester LE2 1WP

Those wishing to take their interest further are welcome to join our small friendly, informal group of regulars at Sangha Night on Thursday evenings. Sangha means spiritual community. Each week we meditate and explore a particular aspect of Buddhist teaching and practice. You don’t need to commit to coming every week or decide you’re a Buddhist. Just come along with an open mind and a willingness to try out the teachings and practices to see if they work for you. And make some new friends at the same time.
Charge by voluntary donation (suggested donation: £4 – £7 per week to cover cost of room hire etc.).
